HIGASHIKATA Yuhei (b. 1982) is a Japanese artist (PhD, Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts). Originally trained in sculpture and installation, his recent practice extends to video installation and participatory projects.
In 2021, he stayed in Huế, Vietnam, as a research fellow of the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan), and has since continued long-term research and production there.
Through humorous and fragile gestures, his works explore mobility, play, and postcolonial imagery, translating field research into poetic yet critical reflections on everyday life across Japan and Southeast Asia. Recent exhibitions include AOMORI GOKAN Art Fes 2024 – Enjoy! Art Farm!! (Hachinohe City Museum) and Art Center Ongoing (Tokyo) in 2024.
He has participated in Month of Art Practice in 2023 and 2024, with the current project marking his third approach in 2025.
