The Intersection of New Creative Elements
Laima Matuzonytė (b. 1996, Vilnius, Lithuania) holds a BA in graphic art from Vilnius Academy of Arts, Vilnius, Lithuania, and an MFA in printmaking arts from KASK, Gent, Belgium. Her recent exhibitions were Backgrounds and players together with Paulius Šliaupa at Menų skalbykla, Naujieji Valkininkai, Lithuania (2023) and It Looked Like a World Outside Your House together with Hanne Grobet at MAP, Gent, Belgium (2022). She uses drawing and printmaking as her main media. Her practice evolves from drawings for books and publications to installations. Image is central to her creation. Her work is often based on images captured while living or travelling in various places and represents how the history of different countries shapes people’s lives now. She redraws photographs taken while observing daily life. Thus she is also questioning the relation between image and reality, and the theatricality of such pictures. Another thematic line in her work is a “fake” nature idea. She is collecting images of situations that balance what is considered to be nature and what is not (such as tamed fox, industrial waste mountains, and green areas in the city). She is turning them into visual metaphors.
